A famous (at least for french geologists of the past century…) sketch by Maurice Mattauer. In the seventies, Mattauer, partly influenced by the work of John Ramsay, put forward the concept of structural levels. This illustrates that, under the same large-scale tectonic forces, different structures may form at different levels in the crust, because of temperature-dependent rock deformation processes.
Maurice Mattauer's work on tectonics was very influential for many french geologists in the last decades of the 20th century, though perhaps less well known by english speaking people, because a lot was written in french. In the eighties, as a PhD student under Mattauer's supervision, I was one of those influenced geologist… “ Hmmm, Hmmm, Quoi de neuf ? ”
